Here are my notes from Code4LibBC Day 1 lightning talks!
Paul Joseph – Opening Talk
- The systems librarian is the bridge between different types of people and technology
 - Regardless, the connection is that people have information in common
 - We’re here today to provide a space and time to collaborate and jam together

Linda Woodcock – RDA: 10 Things
- RDA is to make it more operable and readable
 - Adopted by LC in March 2013, LAC May 2013
 - Things that will look different
- record as exactly as seen (for the most part)
 - no more latin
 - no more abbreviating
 - media types moved (no more GMD) to another field
 - FRBR
 - precise relationships between works
 - metadata registry employed
 - improve collocation

 - main differences: more granularity
 - implementation: updated MARC21, decide new fields, authority files
 - future consideration: global changes to make more consistent

Mark Jordan – Adding Linked Data to SFU’s Editorial Cartoons Collection
- one of the few collections using controlled subjects (not just keywords) that are linked
 - 6916 subjects in total (sources: TGM 1, TGM 2, LCSH, MESH)
 - added URI (identifier on web) to vocab terms
 - used scripts to match LOC triples to subjects being used
 - the subject stores URI, but show user the readable information (in whichever language is needed)
 - MODS entry in Islandora: when adding topic/term, populate with URI in background

Marcus Emmanuel Barnes – METS-Bagger Tool
- digitized collection not managed for long term preservation
 - digitized content packaging specification being developed
 - normalizing existing digitized content based on specification for robust long term management
 - 2 components:
- collection normalization script
 - integrity scripts based on collection manifest

 - collection normalization: processes existing files to do inventory, organize them in a consistent manner
 - incorporates METS, BagIt, and UUID (universally unique identifiers)
 - developed in Python
 - plugins for technical and descriptive metadata
 - future: addition of manifest and integrity checking tools, additional plugins

Misty De Meo – Archivematica Format Policy Registry (FPR)
- configurable repository of recognized formats
 - set of rules for identifying and processing files
 - open-source, separate FPR admin app
 - can be used by other projects or integrated into other platforms
 - customizations allowed: adding new file formats, what file extensions maps to what file formats
 - customize internal software behaviour
 - Next: flexible metadata extraction

Cynthia Ng – Shifting Perspectives: From Disability Accommodation to Universal Design
Stefan Khan-Kernahan – DocStore
- a very small part of course reserves
 - replace current course reserve (Ares)
 - keep up with changing needs/workflows
 - scale better for collection size
 - better user experience
 - better handle requests e.g. copyright approval
 - IE causes problems with https default

May Chan – Hackfests for the Uninitiated
- values diversity and inclusiveness
 - went into the code4lib national thinking a “lowly” newcomer, cataloguer
 - but got excited from learning from the person next to her that she could also learn from researching and reading
 - there is no shame in looking over someone’s shoulder
 - everyone can read
 - collaborative learning can be infection and mutative
 - it’s what you make out of it

That’s it for the talks! Breakout time beginning with a cute animal:
